Understanding the causes of cancer is a major step toward developing effective action plans. Family history and genetics play a role of cancer risk. While many resources estimate that inherited genetic mutations account for about 5–10% of cancer causes, recent scientific research suggests that this number may be higher—potentially 10–15%, and for some cancer types, even up to 20%. Organizations such as FORCE (Facing Our Risk of Cancer Empowered) emphasize the importance of recognizing hereditary cancer risk.

At the same time, research indicates that approximately 90% of cancer causes are associated with lifestyle and environmental factors. Experts estimate that nearly 30% of all cancers are linked to tobacco use, about 35% to dietary factors, 14–20% to obesity, 18% to infections, and around 7% to radiation and environmental pollutants. Other factors also contribute to cancer causes and cancer risk.

Cancer causes and cancer prevention strategies influence multiple systems and networks within the body, playing a critical role in overall health. Proactive, whole-person interventions can improve quality of life, enhance cancer survival, and support prevention efforts. Achieving these outcomes often requires a comprehensive plan, a supportive care team, and effective self-care strategies. By focusing on the underlying causes of cancer and cancer prevention methods, individuals can gain valuable knowledge to reduce their cancer risk. The following topics and actionable steps are designed to help you work toward optimal health and healing.
